Studio Recital June 4th

On Friday, June 4th at 7:00 pm I will be holding a Studio Recital on which all of my students are invited to perform. Many students are already working on pieces that would be suitable to perform for an audience of family, friends, and fellow students. A piece that has been performed in the past (such as for solo & ensemble) is also welcome.

The recital will take place at Blanchard Alliance Church, 1766 S. Blanchard St. in Wheaton. There is no charge to participate; however, each student should arrange for their own accompanist and provide him or her with the piano score. You should discuss fees with your accompanist upon first contact. I have spoken with and can recommend Mrs. Marcelyn Peterson if you do not already have an accompanist. Please contact her at (630) 784-0569.

Please let me know whether or not your child will be participating. If your child does not yet have a solo piece but is interested in performing please contact me as soon as possible and we’ll find one. I look forward to hearing fine examples of great progress and exciting performances developed through the hard work of your child.

Also, I noticed that the Community School of the Arts is doing a College Prep Day for students who may be interested in pursuing a music major in college. Jack M. has earned this past week's Outstanding Student award. Jack is a steady, diligent worker and shows regular improvement in his playing week after week. Recently, he put in a couple of good performances at his district's and the IHSA solo and ensemble festivals, earning a division I rating. Jack is always focused in lessons and is developing a better sound, range, and technique. Keep up the good work!

Tomorrow, Sunday, January 24th in the afternoon I'll be performing with a brass ensemble with International Chamber Artists on the 4 pm concert at St. Gregory Church in Chicago. We're playing two very exciting pieces on the program. Another option is at 3 pm John Hagstrom will be playing a recital in Arlington Heights. Mr. Hagstrom plays second trumpet in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and was my teacher in graduate school. Both concerts are free, so you can't go wrong with either of these great concerts on a Sunday afternoon!

2. Metronome - This is a "must-have" tool for every musician.
3. Mute - A good straight mute, cup mute, and Harmon mute is necessary for any fine trumpet player.
4. Trumpet CDs - Check out my Amazon list of recommended recordings here.
5. Trumpet Music - Sometimes it's fun to get a book of familiar songs, hymns, or solos.
6. BERP - This is a great tool for practicing (and one that I require of my students to have).
7. Trumpet Stand - This is a fun (but not totally necessary) accessory.
8. SmartMusic Subscription - Several students have already subscribed and downloaded this great program for practicing and playing at home on your computer. It costs just $30 a year.

Baby Reichenbach is Here!

We are pleased to announce the arrival of Simeon David Reichenbach on Wednesday night at 8:18 pm. He weighed in at 8 lbs. 5 oz. and is 21 inches long. Both Christy and baby are doing pretty well and trying to get some sleep. You can check out some pictures here.

I'm not sure what lessons I'll teach this week or not yet, but I'll let you know soon.

In case you're wondering why we picked the names Simeon David you can keep reading. We chose Simeon after the (old) guy in Luke 2 who visits the baby Jesus. Brian has always admired this ordinary guy who lived such a life as to wait on God for the arrival of the Messiah. This was the last thing on his "to do" list before he died, and it is our hope that Simeon will also look for God in his life and live for His second coming. (There's also a wonderful and famous Bach cantata Ich habe genug (I have enough) based on Simeon.) In a general sense Simeon affirms the importance of one generation passing the baton to the next. We are grateful of our rich heritage of grandparents and parents who have set a wonderful example for us and our son. David is Christy's father for whom she holds such love and admiration. We will be blessed if we some day form such a bond between Simeon David and us.

Beginning the week of June 7th I will be teaching lessons on two different days at two different locations throughout the summer. Monday afternoon/evening lessons will be at College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn. On Tuesday morning/afternoons I will teach at my home in Lombard. Announcing a Studio Masterclass June 6th

In the past I have held a studio recital in the spring for students to perform for family, friends, and fellow students. This time around, though, I've decided to do something a little different and instead invite my students to perform in a masterclass with guest Dr. Terry Schwartz, Professor of Trumpet at Wheaton College. Dr. Schwartz was my trumpet teacher in college and, in addition to being an amazing trumpet player, is one of the best pedagogues of brass instruments I know. I believe students will benefit greatly from having the opportunity to work with him, and students and parents alike with enjoy watching Dr. Schwartz interact with each trumpeter.

The masterclass will take place on Saturday morning, June 6th from 10 to 11:30 am at a location yet to be determined. All students are invited to perform a solo or etude. Piano accompaniment is optional. They will then work individually with Dr. Schwartz. Please note that because of our limited time and my desire to give Dr. Schwartz enough time to work with each student there will be a limit to how many students may perform. All students, family, and friends, however, are welcome to this free event. Spaces will be filled in the order in which I receive the form below. Please let me know if you have any questions. I've been thinking about this for a while, so here's the deal: There are a whole bunch of great concerts featuring trumpet players coming up in the next few months. Live concerts are not only enjoyable, but incredibly inspiring and educational to us musicians. So to encourage my students (and their parents) to get out and go to one of these concerts I will be offering credit for one free lesson to any current student who attends one of the concerts listed at right through the end of this school year.

All you need to do is show me the program or ticket stub and post a comment on the blog describing the performance. I can only afford one free lesson per student, but you are of course welcome to go to as many as you like. Also, this deal is limited only to the concerts listed (mine and the recommended ones), but if you see a concert that I should list here let me know. Considering that many of these concerts are not too expensive and most offer student discounts I think this is a great opportunity for you to enjoy live music this spring!

Ben recently performed on the studio recital and has been making great progress in his sound and musical approach to the trumpet. Outstanding Student of the Week, November 30th

I enjoyed hearing several students perform on Saturday. Becky S., Geoff C., Hans W., and Scott L. all did a fine job. I'm always impressed and encouraged by all of the parents and extended family who come out to hear the performance. Playing for others is not only a great motivation for practicing, but our way of sharing our musical gifts. Other than Solo & Ensemble Contests that many schools participate in around February, there will be another chance to perform in a studio recital in the spring.

High school student Conrad O. is this past week's Outstanding Student of the Week. Conrad has made gradual progress in his trumpet playing over the last year of working together. His sound has improved significantly as well as his music reading and range. Like all of us, he at times reverts to the "old way of playing," but he is increasingly producing an easier, more pleasing sound in all registers. Way to go, Conrad!

Last chance to hear two trumpet concerto Monday

This Monday is the last opportunity to hear myself and Tom Tallman perform Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Trumpets with the COD Chamber Orchestra. The brief concert at 5 pm in the foyer of the McAninch Arts Center is free and open to the public. This is an exciting piece from the Baroque era (c. early 1700s). Originally written for the valveless natural trumpet, it is most often performed today on piccolo trumpets.

Eighth grader, Andrew Z., was recently selected to be a member of the 2008-2009 Youth Jazz Ensemble of DuPage (www.YJED.com). This big band is made up by auditions of outstanding area high school jazz students. The ensemble has had a distinguished career, including performances at Lincoln Center in New York City and with world-class jazz musicians. Congratulations Andrew!

Over the last few weeks Charis has been preparing well for lessons through good practice and has been playing well at her lessons. Remembering Arnold Jacobs

I heard on the radio this morning that today is the 10^th anniversary of the death of Arnold Jacobs, longtime Principal Tubist of the Chicago Symphony and famous brass pedagogue. It was about 11 years ago now that I had the chance to take a lesson with Jacobs in his studio in Chicago. If you don’t know anything about him here’s a website with a bunch of stuff on him: http://www.windsongpress.com/jacobs/jacobs.htm. He, along with the late Vincent Cichowicz (http://www.trumpetguild.org/pdf/9812schu.pdf), spread the concepts of the Chicago school of brass playing around the world through their playing, teaching, and many successful students.

Trumpet Studio Recital: November 15th

On Saturday, November 15^th at 11:30 am I will be holding a Studio Recital on which all of my students are invited to perform. Many students are already working on pieces that would be suitable to perform for an audience of family, friends, and fellow students. A piece that has been performed in the past (such as for solo & ensemble) is also welcome.

The recital will take place at Blanchard Alliance Church, 1766 S. Blanchard St. in Wheaton. There is no charge to participate; however, each student should arrange for their own accompanist and provide him or her with the piano score. You should discuss fees with your accompanist upon first contact. I have spoken with and can recommend Mrs. Marcelyn Peterson if you do not already have an accompanist. Please contact her at (630) 784-0569.

Please fill out the slip that was sent home to let me know whether or not your child will be participating. If your child does not yet have a solo piece but is interested in performing please let me know as soon as possible and we’ll find one. I look forward to hearing fine examples of great progress and exciting performances developed through the hard work of your child.

It still feels like summer but the calendar tells me it's time to get back to school! Here's an outline of my teaching schedule this semester. Please contact me for individual lesson times.

Monday: COD
Tuesday: Glenbard South (morning) & Lombard (after school)
Wednesday: Wheaton South
Thursday: Olivet

Beginning in September my lesson rate will increase to $25 per half hour lesson. The billing system will remain the same: Payment is due each month at the first lesson of that month. Progress reports and statements will be sent home the last lesson of each month. The code for registering for COD lessons this semester is 14751 by calling (630) 942-2377.

Don't miss great (free) concerts this summer!

We braved the risky weather last night (which turned out to be nothing but a few drops) and heard the Grant Park Orchestra for the first time this summer. As always, this orchestra does really interesting programs and the Pritzker Pavilion in itself is a stunning setting, and the concerts are always free! Bill McGlaughlin hosted the concert live, kind of like he does every weeknight at 7 pm on his excellent radio show, Exploring Music on 98.7 WFMT. If there is only one thing you do in Chicago this summer, I’d recommend going to one of their concerts. You can take a picnic and sit on the lawn, if you’d like, or sit up close in the seats. Check out the links at the right for even more great concert ideas.
